One nice thing about being someone who makes things of a uniform size and shape is that you can see your body of work coming together visually. My stack of American Elf sketchbooks always blows my mind. Another reason I had to quit was because there was no more room on the shelf for them.
Bodies of work
Artists often talk about a “body of work.” It’s the thing you shoot for, the slow accumulation of all the bits and pieces over time into something substantial.
One nice thing about being someone who makes things of a uniform size and shape is that you can see your body of work coming together visually. Above, boxes of Jessica Hagy’s index cards, and below, James Kochalka’s 14 years worth of American Elf sketchbooks.

top-shelf-comix: A tribute to James Kochalka’s American Elf (which ends tomorrow) by the wonderful Norwegian cartoonist Jason. Meanwhile, we’re continuing to work with James to roll out the remastered digital editions of American Elf with new covers, for Comixology, Apple iBooks, ComicsPlus by iVerse, etc. - the latest one is American Elf 2005. And we can’t wait to see where he goes from here!
